NY Giants

  1. As a kid, listening to Giants football on WNEW radio gave me a taste of what the my parent’s pre-TV generation experienced. All Giant home games were blacked out in those days, but I happily turned on my transistor radio and listened to Marty Glickman and Chip Cipolla (and later Sam Huff) call the games. It was exciting, mesmerizing , and in some ways better than a television broadcast. When the Giants were on the road, often turned off the TV sound and let Glickman work his magic as well.
Today, Direct TV and the NFL package are awesome. But if it wasn’t for the great radio broadcasts of that day, I wonder if the NFL would have grown to be as popular as it is. Regardless, those broadcasts were special treasures for a young fan.
