  1. If radio had an apex, it — he — was Gene Klavan on WNEW. He was brilliant, funny, supremely skillful, and he had a wonderful radio voice. He welcomed me into his studio when I was nobody, created a hilarious on-air character with my name, and autographed copies of his two books with thoughtful, encouraging — and eloquent — comments.
WNEW was a different place after he left. Ted was terrific, Willie was wonderful, Jim Lowe and Bob Jones were the best in the business, but Gene was gone, and our beloved station was never as great. Unfortunately, the management gaffe that let him get away was part of a trend. Alas.
